SEGA MEGA-CD

Image
The SEGA Mega-CD was supposed to be the future of electronic entertainment, but what went wrong? I don't recall that much excitement around the Mega-CD in the UK. However; I do recall being rightly pissed off with Sega for launching the Mega-CD a whole two years after it's initial launch in Japan. By the time I got mine, it was late October 1993... the UK launch price was way more expensive than originally anticipated, and the wait continued until I eventually raised the extra funds. I ended up with a Mega-CD MKII model, but happily handed over my hard earned cash, safe in the knowledge that SEGA couldn't possibly screw things up, in fact thinking about it now, "How did they?". SEGA had brand power, marketing might, and Megadrive established living room space "Surely failure was inconceivable?" I completely forget how many months had flown by, all merges into one after a while, but I do recall being quietly convinced that sales were looking good. The ...

SEGA SATURN - Classic Consoles

Image
Tell me about the Saturn? It's big, it's powerful, and a good all-rounder. The Sega Saturn might not be the most glamorous in the polygon department, but its ability to churn out games like Sega Rally and Panzer Dragoon caused quite a stir in gaming circles. The PlayStation ruled, but the Saturn shouldn't have been left so far behind.  Any good? It used two Hitachi SuperH-2 7604 32-bit RISC processors at 28.63 MHz and many other off the shelf parts that made development difficult, but most Japanese  developers swore by it and were able to produce exciting results. The Sega Saturn wasn't the wet salmon everyone believ...

STAR WARS - ARCADE

Image
Ever since StarWars flashed before my eyes, I've been hooked. I was just a kid back then, but the impression it left will stay with me until a right good ole' age. There's something else I probably shouldn't admit to, I had such a soft spot for the movie, I imagined playing the lead role and would pretend to shoot down Tie Fighters and ultimately the Death Star from the safety of my armchair. It had to happen, my only surprise is that it took so long. The now decidedly ropey Atari released Star Wars in 1983, it was a nice attempt at doing something new with a classic film. The graphics and sound were amazing for the time and had colourful vector graphics. It also featured the really cool heroic music of the movie, accompanied by smooth reactive-tight controls and a movie-authentic blasting noise. The speech is where it impressed the- be-Jesus outta me and at the time I thought the stuff of dreams. Star Wars was definitely my favourite game as a kid, I'd nev...
