The ultimate 2 Player Games
You can't beat an epic two-player experience! My earliest memory of a two-player game is playing Gauntlet on the Amstrad CPC with my cousin. We would spend hours on it, and then came Deeper Dungeons with 500 more levels, many of which were fan-made and from the developers themselves. Another early memory is Target Renegade, a fantastic game that was even better with a friend. It actually improved over the arcade original and then some.
Then came Gryzor, and I was blown away. The home conversion I had was far from arcade perfect, but it allowed you to team up with a friend, which was a game-changer for the time in both depth of gameplay and cooperative action. But there were many more. Here's my list of favourite two-player games.
10. Gauntlet (1985): This dungeon crawler was a hit in arcades, allowing up to four players to team up and battle through hordes of enemies. Its cooperative gameplay and unique character classes made it a standout.
9. Contra (Gryzor UK) (1987): Known for its intense action and cooperative gameplay, Contra had players team up to battle through waves of enemies and challenging bosses.
8. Bubble Bobble (1986): This charming platformer had players controlling cute dinosaurs, Bub and Bob, as they trapped enemies in bubbles and popped them. Its cooperative gameplay made it a favourite.
7. Ikari Warriors (1986): This top-down shooter allowed two players to team up and battle through enemy lines. Its cooperative gameplay and unique rotary joystick controls made it a memorable experience. The Amstrad CPC conversion came out a whole year before the other 8bits and was superlative.
6. Street Fighter II (1991): This iconic fighting game revolutionised the genre with its diverse roster of characters and strategic gameplay. It became a staple in arcades and home consoles.
5. Mario Kart 64 (1996): This racing game brought friends together for thrilling races and hilarious battles. The multiplayer mode was a hit, making it a must-have for Nintendo 64 owners.
4. GoldenEye 007 (1997): This first-person shooter on the Nintendo 64 set the standard for multiplayer gaming with its split-screen mode, allowing up to four players to compete in various scenarios. Get the Golden Gun!
3. Tekken 3 (1997): A standout in the fighting game genre, Tekken 3 offered a deep roster of characters and fluid gameplay, making it a favourite for competitive play.
2. Driver 2 (2000): This action-packed driving game allowed players to switch between vehicles and explore open-world environments. Its multiplayer mode provided endless fun and excitement.
1. Super Smash Bros. (1999): This crossover fighting game featured characters from various Nintendo franchises, providing endless fun and chaotic battles for up to four players.
Whether it was battling it out in Street Fighter II or racing to the finish line in Mario Kart 64, these two-player games created unforgettable memories for gamers around the world.
